Four Generations Living in HOAs

Many of today’s condominium and homeowner associations are dealing with four generations of homeowners. In fact, your Board probably consists of people from different generations. Each generation has its own value system and preferences, which can create chaos and controversy. As a leader, it’s your job to stop controversy before it begins. Whether you’re leading your HOA Board or dealing with homeowner issues, these points can help you understand the preferences of each generation.

Traditionalists (born 1922 – 1945)

These people believe in conforming to rules and have a great deal of respect for authority. Also called the silent generation, many traditionalists rarely challenge authority. Like most other people, they dislike change. However, they will support change when they feel that there’s a valid reason. Face-to-face discussions and the written word top their communication preference. Many of them are not computer savvy, so make sure you have other communications in addition to online information.

Baby Boomers (born 1946 – 1964)

Baby boomers test the water and question authority. They are great team members, so let them know that their contribution is needed if you want their help. They typically prefer personal communications, excelling in small group meetings and one-on-one discussions. Many have also developed strong computer skills and are open to electronic communications. When they are convinced that a decision is correct, boomers will loyally support it.

Generation X (born 1965 – 1980)

Count on Gen X individuals to challenge the status quo. They want details and to understand the “why” behind decisions and rules. They possess adaptability and problem solving traits that work well in groups. Most of this generation is comfortable with electronic and written communications. They tend to value both their personal and professional life somewhat equally, building strong relationships in both sectors.

Millennials (born 1981 – 2001)

As the first generation of the electronic age, millennials are the most tech-savvy as a whole. These multi-taskers are excellent electronic communicators. They often bring an entrepreneurial focus to their teams and enjoy participative meetings. Millennials are enthusiastic and flexible workers when volunteering. They desire meaningful work, so recruit them for committees and Board positions where they can make a difference in the association.
